Check It Out: Milk of Magnesia

Milk of Magnesia
Store: CVS, 4 0z
Price: $3.49
Ingredients: (in each 15 ml Tbsp): Magnesium Hydroxide (1200 mg). Inactive Ingredients: Purified Water, Sodium Hypochlorite.

Fifteen years or so ago when I was younger - and oilier, I started using Milk of Magnesia under my makeup to keep it from dripping off. Yes, that oily. It was a trick I had read from Paula Begoun, the Cosmetics Cop, before she started selling her own makeup and skin care. It really does work! This is a good primer alternative for people who breakout using Dimethicone primers (Monistat, MAC, Smashbox).

Once MOM dries, it leaves behind a matte, somewhat chalky finish. It makes your skintone look more even. However, if you are dark, it will make you look pale and masked - so use wisely.

Much like baking soda, there are many applications for MOM. It can be used as a makeup primer, facial mask treatment, underarm deodorant and on the feet to reduce foot funk.

Facial Mask: Use a cotton ball or pad and get it wet with MOM and smooth over the face and neck. Wait 10 minutes or until dry and then rinse off with water. This will leave a matte cast on your face.

Primer: It's better to thin this out if you are going to use it under your makeup. Mix with some water in a squirt bottle and then use fingers, sponge or foundation brush to even out over your face. Wait until it is dry and then apply makeup. As with most primers, this works better when using mineral makeup. Some people rub too hard when applying liquid makeup and they rub their primer right off.

REMEMBER: You don't need the brand name stuff, generic has the same ingredients. Also, buy the 'original' variety, not the flavored variety. Well, unless you want to smell like Spearmint.
