Final Thoughts on Ly-Na Pearl Cream

Just wanted to put in my last 2 cents on the Ly-Na Pearl Cream I purchased a couple weeks ago. I used it every day for a week before giving up on it. It's not a bad product, it just didn't do anything for my skin. I would put it on at night and left it on for a minimum of two hours. I didn't want to sleep in it since I would get it all over the bed. After using it for a few days, I noticed that I had a layer of dry skin that I didn't have before I started using it. If you have oily skin, this might be useful. I tried using it on a pimple I had squarely between my eyes (wouldn't you figure, a pimple bullseye). The cream didn't do a thing for it and the pimple ran it's usual course.

I guess I'll go back to searching for that elusive Paraben-Free miracle cream out there!

My Unfortunate Chemical Romance

I'm back from my short vacation! Good visit, lots of snow, but I had a run-in with a nasty shampoo. I managed to run off and forget to bring my Jason's shampoo and conditioner. So, I used what was available, which was Pantene. I felt the shampoo sting as soon as it hit my head, but being stupid and stubborn, I went ahead and washed and then slapped conditioner on top of it. A couple hours later, I felt the welts on my scalp and around my hairline.

I just used the Pantene once and here I am four days later with welts and infected pimply things all over my head. I just want to cry. There is a trail of destruction going from the back of my head, down my neck and halfway down my back. Back in the old days, I used to use Pantene regularly. I had spots and pimples all over my neck and back, but the dermatologist told me it was just regular acne. It went away when I started using Jason's a few months ago. All those years I thought I just had crappy skin. Aaaagh!

Pretty certain the culprits for my burns and irritation are the MCI and MIT common in most shampoos and body washes. If I can finally heal from this, I swear I will never use any product with these ingredients ever again!

Pantene Ingredients: Water , Ammonium Laureth Sulfate , Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate , Sodium Chloride , Glycol Distearate , Citric Acid , Cocamide MEA , Panthenol , Panthenyl Ethyl Ether , Dimethicone , Fragrance , Cetyl Alcohol , Sodium Citrate , Sodium Benzoate , Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride , Disodium EDTA , Hydrogenated Polydecene , Trimethylolpropane Tricaprylate/Tricaprate , Ammonium Xylenesulfonate , Methylchloroisothiazolinone , Methylisothiazolinone

Going on Vacation!

I will be out of the state and away from the computer for the next few days. I will be back on Sunday. Hopefully, I will run across some great Paraben Free products along the way!

GDA: CVS - Vickery & Clarke

Thanks to Charisse for dropping a comment on this! CVS has their Vickery and Clarke line on sale this week. These products are comparable to Bath and Body Works and The Body Shop - without the Parabens. Oprah is apparently a fan as well. I looked at most of their product line, and the ingredients are good, but always read the label before you purchase.

If you are a CVS shopper, they have $5 in bucks for every $15 in V&C that you purchase. From the sale flyer:

When you buy $15 worth of Vickery and Clarke
get $5 extra bucks
Extra Bucks® offer limit of 1 per household with card.

Haul: Zoya Nail Polish

Colbie, Jasmine, Kalista, Yasmeen, KI, Color Cube Sugar Plum Party - Casey/Visa.

I've meant to post this Zoya haul for some time now, but I never got around to taking a pic of it. These are the nail polishes I ordered from back on this post. I am kind of surprised at how well the colors photograph. They actually look very similar to each other when you are just looking at the bottles.

I have to say, Zoya is probably my favorite nail polish brand. I like the Honeybee Gardens polish for their lack of polish smell, but Zoya has the best color choices by far. These are rich and you can get decent coverage with one coat. I normally use two.

Out of these, I like Kalista (mahogany brown) and Jasmine (copper red) the best. The wear is good. I can usually go at least a couple of days before touching up small chips.

Are You Doing Paraben Free This Christmas?

Working on my Christmas shopping list tonight. I am trying to give family and friends Paraben Free products for Christmas instead of my usual basket of Bath & Body Works Paraben-palooza. I was wondering what you guys were giving this Christmas/Holiday Season? Hit me so I can post any new finds.

I just put in another big order with Vitacost. Per my previous posts, I just love them. I picked up several sets of Desert Essence body wash and lotion. They are comparably yummy to the BBW products I gave up.

Haul: Ly-Na Pearl Cream

The Holy Grail for clear skin?

Finally got my Ly-Na Pearl Cream in from the Taiwan. I bought it off E-Bay and had forgotten about it. I have it spackled across my nose right now. It's my worst place for blackheads. It has a slight smell, which isn't that bad considering it does contain Sulfur. It is kind of perfumey and really, really greasy. Not quite so bad once it sets up on your skin. I don't see wearing it overnight, though. It would get all over the place.

I'm not expecting a miracle from this stuff, but I do feel a tingle. Does that count? LOL. The Sulfur ingredient is a standard ingredient for prescription acne medication and has been used forever in skin remedies. I have read that pearl powder provides moisture along with being a skin lightener.

The container is much larger than the actual product inside. The box states 12 grams of product. The ingredients on the box are listed as Sulfur 1.5% and Pearl Powder .1%. No mention of Parabens. I can't guarantee it's Paraben Free, but I can't find it listed anywhere.

Read my previous entry for more details and a link to Vanessa's blog where she does a demo of it here.

Still Alive and Kicking!!!

Thanks to everyone who has sent me messages asking if I am still doing the blog. I'm still here and I have tons of things lined up. I got lazy for a few days and then got sucked into my job. I work for an international company, so I am expected to be available 24/7. I will try to get caught up this week.

I haven't been buying much since I am saving up for Christmas presents. I did get my Ly-Na Pearl Paste and a bunch of polishes from Zoya. Holla at you later!

Making Your Mineral Eyeshadow Last

This one is for Kikobrat. She wanted to know why her mineral eyeshadow disappeared when she tried to blend it. The trick to increasing the color payoff and lasting power of eyeshadow is to foil it. This just means using water or a mixing medium (water and glycerin) when you apply it. I use Milani Runway eyeshadow most days for work. I always use a mixing medium and apply it wet. One day I was running late and tried to use them normally - dry. I brushed and brushed color color onto my lids and barely any color. By the end of the day, it was all gone. When I apply wet, it's there all day and only comes off when I remove my makeup at night.

You don't necessarily have to press your mineral eyeshadow for this to work, I just find it more convenient. You can use the loose mineral just fine. The trick is to use very little of the minerals. Below is the step-by-step I use with loose minerals. Try it, adjust it and see if it improves your color and wearability.

Tools used: 3 eyeshadow brushes - An old ratty brush, a Lowe Cornell goat hair paint brush, an Elf eyeshadow brush. Mixing medium - 3 parts water to 1 part glycerin in a squirt bottle. Tissue. Plastic top from old makeup palette - or something to mix on.

1. I start with the lightest colors and work my way up. I take the ratty brush, touch it to the mineral eyeshadow and tap the contents onto the plastic top. You don't need to dip, just touching will give you more than enough. Wipe it on tissue before using next color.

2. I put a single drop of the mixing medium on the back of my hand. You can put the drop anywhere, but I use my hand. I take my Lowe Cornell brush and dip both sides in the drop. If it get too wet, touch it to the tissue.

3. I touch both sides of the Lowe Cornell into the minerals and apply in smooth strokes. I repeat application of the color if necessary.

4. I wipe the brush on the tissue and move to the next color until look is completed. I don't try to blend at this point, I am just applying.

5. You will be able to tell whether the shadow is still wet without actually needing to touch it. Once your eyelids are no longer wet, you can blend your eyeshadow as usual. I use the Elf eyeshadow brush for this.

6. Be sure to wash your wet brush after you are done. I wash mine every day and the others a couple times a week.

Cosmetic Restriction Diet - Less Is More

I was going through my bookmarks and re-read an article from the NY Times about the Cosmetics Restriction Diet - how the fewer products you use, the better. It's always been my philosophy that the less you mess with your skin the less problems it will cause you. Same for hair, nails, etc. You use a cleanser because your skin is oily which strips the natural oils making you use a moisturizer that breaks you out and you use an acne product which causes your skin to product more oil so you use more cleanser... Get the picture?

It's the same deal with cosmetics. You don't need to use 20 different products when only two or three will do everything you need. Remember that when you are packing on the makeup, you are packing on the chemicals. Even if you only use organic and Paraben Free products, you are still rubbing a pretty interesting mix of possible irritants into your skin.

I recommend you don't use any of the products mentioned in this article. They all contain Parabens.

"The Consumer Reports study found, for example, that a three-step regimen of Olay Regenerist products costing $57 was slightly more effective at reducing the appearance of wrinkles than a $135 tube of StriVectin-SD or a $335 combination of two La Prairie Cellular lotions."

Consumer Reports Busts Sunscreens on Nano Particles

I read an interesting article on The Consumerist a few days ago about sunscreens who advertise as Nano Particle free actually contain them. It just never ends. Nano and Micro Particles are also in many forms of makeup these days. These are being linked as causing possible nerve damage since they can enter the bloodstream and travel to the brain.

It makes you wonder exactly what is in our makeup and beauty products. Consumers really don't have a way to verify product ingredients - aside from paying $$$ to have products tested at a lab. The only available home test kits are for lead. A reader brought this up a few weeks ago, wondering if what we were using is actually what is on the ingredients list. I spent hours searching for ways to test cosmetics and it's just not possible without a lab.

"Four of them, all labeled natural or organic, actually did contain nanoparticles: Aubrey Organics Natural Sun SPF 25 Green Tea Protective Sunscreen, Badger SPF 30 Sunscreen, Kiss My Face SPF 30+ Sun Screen with oat protein complex and Mexitan SPF 30 Sunscreen. Only one product—Zinka Colored Nosecoat—turned out to be actually free of the

Consumer Reports article.
