OT: Working Hard for the Money

Hi, everyone! I started a part-time job last week and am behind on my posting. This is in addition to my regular 40+ hours in corporate life. I promise to put up some hauls as well as answer reader questions you posted or mailed me.

Right now, The Princess has to go back to scrubbing.

ELF Minerals 50% Off - Again

Just received an e-mail from ELF for a 'clearance sale' on their mineral makeup, 50% off regular price when you spend $25.

Certainly not as good a deal as their 75% sales in January....

Spammers & Comment Moderation

Argh! I had a bunch of spam comments on the blog from Cialis and Acai berries waiting for me this morning. I've left the blog open so people who aren't signed up for Blogger can leave comments. I've just changed my settings to approve any messages before they are posted. Granted, I receive more comments via e-mail than on this blog, but it still ticks me off that people are leaving their spam graffiti on my page.

Haul: Lucky Vitamin - body oil and lip gloss

I was in the middle of typing my earlier fuss about not having mail service today when lo and behold, the UPS guy came a knocking. I've found a new favorite website that is comparable to Lucky is a few cents more expensive on some items and a few dollars cheaper on others, just depends on what you want. Shipping for both websites is a flat $5.95 and they take Paypal, so woot!

I ordered several health and supplement type items and a few you guys might be interested in. I ordered from LV specifically because of their cheap Burt's Bees Shimmer Lip Gloss. Whenever I find these in the store, they are usually $5 or more. Mine were $2.78 each, so I bought 3. I had never tried them before, but I like Burt's products, so I was willing to take the chance. In order - Nutmeg, Cocoa, Rhubarb. The colors are very light so you really have to put on a lot before you manage to over color yourself. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase {especially at that price!}. My one complaint is the peppermint oil. Kind of hits me like an Altoids, but it does fade after a few minutes. I'm going to try other the other colors once I get some use out of these.

Ingredients: Sunflower Oil, Castor Oil, Beeswax, Candelilla Wax, Lanolin, Cocoa Seed Butter, Tocopheryl Acetate & Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Peppermint Oil, Carnauba Wax, Rosemary Leaf Oil. May Contain: Iron Oxide, Mica, Carmine or Titanium Dioxide.

My other find was Alba Natural - Kukui Nut Organic Body Oil - 8.5 Oz. for $5.94. I
have been moaning for months after having to give up my Neutrogena Body Oil which contains Propylparaben. I had been using Jojoba oil, but it is a bit pricey when you are using body quantities. My bottle is 8.5 ounces, same as Neutrogena and half the price. Actually, it was half it's normal price on other websites.

I did an arm slather and really like this. I can't smell much of any fragrance except for the ghost of sunflower oil. It immediately absorbs, and I'm not feeling greasy at all. Alba Botanica sells an entire line like this, but read labels as I have seen some with Parabens. This particular product was once listed as having Parabens, but they came to their senses.

Ingredients: Certified organic helianthus annuus (sunflower) oil, alkyl benzoate, tocopherol and tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E), cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, aleurites moluccana (kukui) seed oil, macadamia ternifolia seed oil, certified organic linum usitatissimum (flaxseed) oil, prunus amygdalus dulcis (sweet almond) oil, fragrance.

• Hypo-allergenic

Reader Questions: Foundations / How do I know a product is safe?

I had several similar e-mails in my inbox and figured I would post my answers in the blog as well.

Q: What foundations are safe to use?

A: Generally, anything that does not contain Parabens or their Nasty Cousins. Personally, I mostly use various brands of mineral foundation. My skin seems to like it better than liquid foundation and my pores don't clog up as often. If you are looking for a liquid formula, there are a few available on the market:
  • Physician's Formula Organic
  • Sally Hansen Natural Beauty by Carmindy
  • Almay Pure Blends
Q: How do I know a product is safe to use?

A: When I'm looking for a new product, I check for the list of ingredients on or It's easier to read labels online than in the store. I start at the bottom and read my way up. The bad stuff is usually the preservative and will be near the end. If there is an ingredient I don't recognize, I look it up on the Cosmetics Safety Database. If a product has any ingredient over a 5, I won' t use it. It's easy to identify the Parabens by name, but others can be tricky. Once you read a few labels, you will be able to quickly identify most of the bad ingredients. It's actually very easy!
